Opening Doors to Opportunity
Access to our tuition-free programs enabled these achievers to meet their educational goals, opening doors to opportunity and growth.

Students in the Durham Literacy Center's core programs are making huge strides in their educational journeys.
Like many young people, Nalina got lost in online school during the pandemic and experienced social anxiety upon return to school – ultimately dropping out.
Carlos considered returning to his home country when his limited English skills prevented his success at work.
Allen felt shame when his young daughter questioned him about not having completed high school.
Access to our tuition-free programs enabled these achievers to meet their educational goals, opening doors to opportunity and growth.
These students' success is our success and you can be part of it.
• Nalina received intensive instruction and GED exam prep in our Youth
Achievement Program and obtained her GED diploma. Now, she prepares
to attend Durham Tech in the fall and take advantage of the UNC system
transfer program to study science and astrology.
• Carlos took advantage of every instructional offering in our ESOL Program
and made dramatic improvements in his English skills, from Low
Intermediate to Advanced English within a year. He’s excelling at work and
a key member of the staff team.
• Allen worked with an Adult Literacy volunteer tutor to successfully pass all
GED subject-matter exams and obtain his high school equivalency diploma.
He is now a role model and homework advisor for his 6th grade daughter.

Your support makes it possible for us to meet our students where they are and offer a pathway to success. On average, about 15% of our funding comes from government sources and we rely on individuals and private grants.
With your help, we can coordinate over a 100 volunteer tutors/instructors to serve more than 320 Durham adults and out-of-school youth this year. We are laser focused on increasing our impact in our new Strategic Plan – priorities include enhancing our College & Career Readiness and Digital/Computer Literacy offerings and providing more opportunities such as voter education, finance and health literacy, and more.
Together, we’re making an impact.
With gratitude,
Lizzie
